Does striking work? Midland newspaper workers may find out

Postby Emily-O on Tue Jun 30, 2009 2:41 pm

Are newspapers as widely used as they once were? I remember the days when everyone subscribed to the local newspaper and it was the main provider of the news. These days we have a TV that provides a 24hr news channel, the Internet where most newspapers publish stories online and you can even get news alerts on your phone! No wonder the Trinity Mirror are struggling. Jobs in Midlands are on the line as the board decide whether to close 8 titles to cut expenditure by £2.5M. Many think that the top bosses are out to line their own pockets instead of providing quality journalism but I can see why they are struggling with sales.

The journalists will now vote on whether to take industrial action. Do you think strikes actually raise attention? How do we get the powerful to hear and listen to our voices? It is the same with animal welfare – caged chickens, fox hunting etc. Striking, in my opinion, doesn’t seem to raise an eyebrow. Would a petition help? Negative publicity in newspaper articles?

Haha! I mainly hear bad news so I guess I am the bringer of it! I don't know if they are going to cut off their online newspapers or not. I hope they don't cut them off! The Midlands does have it rough at the moment but I am sure things will eventually shape up.

Maybe the strike will raise a few eyebrows. Can anyone go on strike? Or do you have to agree it with a union?
