Celebrity TV chefs

I agree with you Bert. These are not campaigners for animal welfare, they are highly respected TV chefs(although perhaps not by people in this forum!). Many people that may not ordinarily have tuned in, will have had their eyes opened by these programmes, long may they continue! :)

Of those that are influenced by what they see, for many they will make more effort to buy free range or organic, some will end up reducing the amount of meat/eggs they consume.(perhaps not what we want but progress all the same). And some, albeit a small percentage of those watching, will actually end up going vegetarian or maybe even vegan.

So i say good on Jamie Oliver and Hugh Ferny Whatshisname!! (even if they are just doing it to make a name, and some money, for themselves)

Hmmm... So o.k. I am glad that some celebs are making some high profile points about these issues, but it just makes meat eaters and veggies who eat eggs (sorry Bert) feel better about themselves when they eat 'organic' or free range options which are also cruel. So I am more sceptical. I think that ultimately such welfarist arguments are rather problematic from an AR point of view, but hey, on the other hand any publicity on the horrors of it must be a good thing, maybe it just gets some people thinking about the 'food' they eat.

Yep it's good to make people think about what they eat but Jamie Oliver, well I can't repeat what I normally call him, on here.
Was it necessary for him to kill a sheep on TV? or do you think that this would also maybe turn people veggie? :?

Well i have to confess that i didn`t actually see much of these programmes. I didn`t know about Jamie Oliver killing the sheep. Sounds like it was pretty horrific viewing. But is that such a bad thing? I`m in two minds about this.

If people want to eat meat, shouldn`t they see how that meat arrives on their plate? I know if i had seen something like this on the tv, it would have shocked me into changing my diet!

If programme makers shy away from showing the truth, or constantly screen sanitised versions, people will go on kidding themselves that animals live a happy life and die a peaceful, pain free death.

I think people need to take a long hard look at themselves and stop buying meat and vegetables from supermarkets. I produce a lot of my familys vegetables from our small garden and all of the eggs we require with a small surplus. The surplus is sold to provide us with the cash to buy more vegetables from local farm shops.
The meat I consume comes from a local smallholding where the animals are kept in excellent almost pet like conditions. I know they are still murdered to provide me with food but they undergo a lot less stress then any dairy cattle. I will become vegetarian, my wife has been for 16 years ! Before hand though I want to open a smallholding and show people what can be done.
thanks

James
