Will all the Midlands jobs loss lead to a "lost generation"?

Postby Emily-O on Thu Aug 13, 2009 1:02 pm

The figures are shocking at the moment. In the past 3 months 40 000 Midlands jobs have been lost. Those sorts of figures, to me, sound almost fictionary. I think the most at risk during this recession are the youths and elders. With little work experience on the CV youths face stern competition when applying for jobs.

One report worries that if the government don’t act fast there may be a “lost generation” of youngsters – a prospect that is not welcome at all! The pressure on our government is immense however I am unsure of how they expect the government to turn this situation around so quickly. I have read a lot of reports of job creations aimed at youngsters and the future jobs fund is in place.

It is easy for the government to create public sector jobs however we are already stretching this sector. It is unrealistic to keep pouring more money and creating more jobs in this specific area. So the other option is to encourage job creation in the private sector surely? Private companies are out to make a profit and, understandably, will want high quality staff.
How can the government encourage growth in the private sector? Will financial rewards be enough to sway companies at this time? Perhaps some tax relief?
